Miami Sustainability

Miami was named one of the top 50 most sustainable cities in the United States. From voluntourism opportunities that support conservation efforts to restaurants with programs that give back to the local community, there are plenty of ways to travel sustainably in this dynamic south Florida city. We’ve put together a two day itinerary for

the most sustainable stay while you’re visiting Miami.

Day 1

START in South Miami

Start your vacation with a hearty, sustainable breakfast at Grown

Grown is real food, cooked slow for fast people. grown’s menu offers organic fast-food focusing on nutrient-dense, farm-to-fork cuisine. grown’s extensive farm network delivers organic, local and sustainable ingredients without harmful products like GMOs, preservatives, hormones, or processed sugar.

Everything on the menu can be made vegetarian and vegan upon request. Practicing sustainability beyond the kitchen, grown utilizes pulp-free and compostable paper products, 100% recyclable cups, BPA-free storage containers

Head to Wynwood

Before visiting Antidote, Miami's beautiful sustainable boutique, grab a cup of coffee at Panther Coffee and take a few quick selfies with the famous Wynwood Walls. Great brands like Where Mountains Meet and Carleen are nestled among Antidote's one-of-a-kind collaborations.

A stroll through Wynwood would be incomplete without a visit to Wynwood Tribe. Simply put, Wynwood Tribe is a sustainable fashion marketplace that focuses on handmade, eco-friendly, fair trade, recycled, and charitable brands. Come for trendy (new and upcycled) clothing, handmade jewelry and shoes, home goods, ethically made bags, and more. You're bound to find something one-of-a-kind for your collection.

After all that walking, you'll need to stop and get a quick bite to eat. Proceed to KYU. The Korean fried chicken and roasted cauliflower at this popular wood-fired Asian barbecue spot in Wynwood are reason enough to visit, but their environmental efforts make it even more enjoyable. Because the restaurant uses flame grilling and all-day smoking for their entrees, both of which use wood, they make it a point to give back to the environment through the Trees For The Future initiative. Every month, the restaurant matches a menu option to "Buy 50 Trees for 5.00."

Next, we'll be in Miami Beach, so if you're staying in the city, now is a great time to drop your purchases off at your Airbnb or hotel and grab your bathing suit!

Make your way to South Beach

You’ve got a few sustainable hotels to choose from while you’re in South Beach including 1 Hotel, Cadillac  Hotel & Beach Club, Miami Beach Edition, and The Standard.  Whichever you decide to land on, you'll be in for a treat. Once you’ve settled in and rested for a bit, head over to Planta for a delicious dinner. Planta is an upscale, plant-based, fine-dining restaurant in South Beach's South of Fifth neighborhood.

The sushi is a must! It's so creative and you won't believe it's all plant-based. I wouldn't get the noodles or dumplings again, but perhaps they just couldn't compete with the greatness of the sushi. The cocktails were also amazing and Bang bang broccoli is a must!  For dessert, the cheesecake will not disappoint.

Day 2

While You're on the Beach

Miami may have a huge car culture, but you absolutely do not need one to get around! Especially while you’re on the beach. Ubers are cheap and plentiful, and if you are just going a short way, Citibikes and your feet will get you everywhere you need to go.

Start your day at Lilikoi Organic Living. Located at the heart of Miami Beach, Florida, Lilikoi is a restaurant that's committed to preparing every dish with the freshest ingredients that are locally and organically sourced. They provide food and nutrition that support a healthier lifestyle and a more sustainable way to live. Lilikoi hired WMD to build their website and shows their in-dining ambience, up-to-date menu, and different delivery options.

Don’t miss What Goes Around Comes Around, a gorgeously edited vintage shop in a quiet nook away from the touristy areas of Miami Beach. You’ll find pristine designer ensembles as well as vintage rock tees and broken-in jeans.

Power up with a green juice next door at Delicious Raw and make your way to Pura Vida for a mango salmon bowl. Both are great spots to sit for a moment and catch up on your Instagram and make a point to source local, sustainable, and organic ingredients whenever possible.

Wrap up your vacation with a Sustainable Miami Beach Sunset Walking Dinner Tour. The Sunset Dinner Tour begins at 5 pm so the weather is much cooler for walking around to 4 of the best restaurants in the neighborhood. Our first stop is a very popular watering hole on Key Biscayne Bay where we’ll start with a welcoming Margarita.

At our second stop, we’ll have a chicken fajita empanada and the first of 2 desserts, a Nutella banana empanada, enjoying both with more great views of Key Biscayne Bay.

We all know lobster rolls, but here in Miami Beach with a style and Latin flair of its own, we’ll have a lobster taco and our last course on the tour will be Italian Gelato. Being a plastic-free sustainable tour, we’ll supply an edible spoon to enjoy your dessert.

South Point Pier, where the ocean and the bay meet. Next up is Nikki Beach, a popular restaurant steps from the beach. And we’ll see many examples of Art Deco buildings that are well-protected by local zoning laws valuing their beauty and presence in South Beach. And our last stop on the tour will be the magnificent Gianni Versace Mansion.

The tour takes 2 hours and the walking distance is a little over 1 mile ending on Ocean Drive, a great car-free pedestrian walking area well-known for art deco hotel bars and perfect for people watching. Tour costs $59.00 p/p (https://www.sustainablemiamibeachfoodietours.com/)
