A Trip to Italy

Miami

When I am in the kitchen, I find myself feeling like I am using two left knives.  Meaning I can’t cook to save my life.  You know what? It’s ok, because with Miami’s plethora of food options, I will not go starving. Every time my stomach sends out a shock wave to let me know it’s time to eat, the food scouting fun begins.

When it comes to the Miami culinary scene, we touch all corners of the world, but on today’s menu, pasta is the priority. While traveling in Italy this summer, I couldn’t help but realize, “ Wow, Miami has great Italian food.”   So, let me take you on a journey to Italy in Miami, beginning with
Caffe Abbracci in Coral Gables (318 Aragon Ave).
This charming Italian comfort food came to Miami in 1989.  My favorites are the mussels marinara, the veal Milanese and the array of risotto’s.

Next, take coral way Northeast towards Brickell and land at the extravagant Brickell City Centre where you will find one of my new favorites, Casa Tua (70 SW 7th St). Attached to Saks 5th Avenue, Casa Tua boasts Italian cuisine for all with options of Charcuterie, pizza, pasta, salads, sandwiches, fish, steak, desserts and coffee.  My absolute favorite is the Cacio e Pepe.

Moving on, let’s travel North on Brickell Ave, and be careful not pass
La Loggia (68 W Flagler St) across from the Federal Court house.  One of downtown Miami’s liveliest lunch scenes.  Straight out of a Grisham novel, this gem is filled with judges, attorneys and some of the best Italian cuisine you can find in Miami.  My first choice is always the gnocchi (sauce based on mood).

Take a quick pit stop at
Fooq’s (1035 N Miami Ave). Traditionally known for their Mediterranean tapas, but ignore that and grab the bucatini. Ask them to throw some burrata on top. It’s not on the menu, but they encourage it.  The creamy burrata cools down the heat coming from the spicy tomato sauce.

Time to cross over to the beach and take advantage of $10 pasta nights on Thursdays at
Machialina (820 Alton Road).   This rustic and cozy spot is the work of James Beard semi finalist Michael Pirolo. Perfect for date night and you MUST save room for the tiramisu.

I know what you are thinking…. “where’s the pizza??”  Last stop, keep heading North and stop at local legend Steve’s Pizza (12101 Biscayne Blvd). Known for their sweet tomato sauce, try your favorite slice. They will not disappoint.  Open until 3am on weekdays and 4am on weekends for that late night craving.

Hope you enjoyed the journey to Italy in Miami.
